Most of the time an individual who is receiving Supplemental Security Income will also be eligible to receive food stamps and Medicaid. Supplemental Security Income is based on income level and resource specifications.

What is a considered a Disability under Social Security?

An individual will be considered disabled under Social Security if he or she cannot perform at the same working capacity as they were before the injury. The Social Security Administration makes the determination if he or she cannot adjust to other lines of work because of the medical condition. The disability or medical condition must remain at least one year or result in death.

Who is Eligible for Social Security Benefits?

Most of the time, for an individual to be eligible for Social Security benefits he or she must have worked in a job covered by Social Security and have a medical condition that meets their definition of a disability. Such disability or medical condition must have lasted at least one year or resulted in death. There are no benefits available for partial or short term disability if the disability lasted less than a year. Further, for Social Security Disability Insurance there is a 5 month waiting period to receive benefits. The purpose of this is to allow enough time for most disabilities to be corrected or for the injured individual to show signs of recovery after the onset of the disability.
